Every year, the Malay College Basketball team will select 15 players who will represent the college for the Hamdan Tahir Trophy in the HKSBP. This team is named the MC Cagers. For 33 years, this team has represented college, and won it for 12 times. MCKK has and still holds the record of being the master in SBP basketball. The largest win was the 2007 PHT Final when the Cagers crash and trash the tough SASER (Seremban Science School) with a a score of 103-62. But that was not the highest margin ever created by the Cagers. So far, the record was made by the 2006 Cagers which won the championship with 44 points ahead from the opponent. The score was 81-37.
Who could have made this team glory and champions if not for Mr. Liew Yong Choon, the current coach of the team. This ex-police officer has been handling and coaching the team for more than 20 years. He was the only coach to have guide and lead the way for the Malaysian team to victory during the '89 SEA Game.
He left the team for about 10 years and came back in 2003. With the help of Mr. Ihsan 'Ise' Ismail from the class of '80, they manage to establish a project called the Quest 4 Glory to return and claim back their title as champions. Their target was to win the tournament in the year 2005 in conjunction with the 100 years celebration, but the team was too good for that and won it 1 year earlier.
The MC Cagers were thankful enough to have this kind of coach. Although strict is usual, but they got to accept it. Next year team looks like winning team but who knows, luck and fate may change. All that they can do is try their best and pray for their success.
In the year 2010, InsyaAllah, most of the 0610 Emperors will be selected as the Cagers '10. Our goal is to win more championships especially the MSSD and to create a whole new record in MCKK, SBP and Malaysia. We also want and would like to maintain the college team title as the 'king of SBP basketball' Hopefully that will come true. Wassalam.
